Doctors in School Program is Coming

on Tuesday, 30 May 2017.

We are very excited about the soon to arrive doctors in school program. We are led to believe that our new purpose built building should arrive this week and early next week – weather permitting.

The building will form our new Wellbeing Hub. We will have a nurse here with us all day on Tuesday and a GP from 11am until 4pm on Tuesday.

The intended start date for this program is Tuesday 18th July.

We ask that all parent update the medical information of their students via our Compass portal or by ringing the general office.

Learning to Use Our Compass Program

What does Compass do for me?
Using Compass allows you to access up-to-date and meaningful information about our school and your child's progress. Compass includes many different features, including the ability to:
• Monitor your child's attendance, and enter an explanation for absence or lateness
• Communicate with your child's teachers, and update your family contact details
• View your child's timetable and the school calendar
• Monitor your child's homework and assessment tasks
• Download and view your child's progress and semester reports
• Book parent-teacher conferences
• Pay and provide consent for events and school fee

Each week we will providing information on an aspect of using our Compass program. This week we will be starting at the very beginning, covering logging into Compass

To log in you will require your unique family username and password. These details were provided to you by our school at welcome Interviews.

Upon first login, you will be required to change your password and confirm your email address and mobile phone number. These details may be used by our school for SMS, password recovery and email communication throughout the year.

If you have lost your details or forgotten your password, you can recover your details by clicking the 'Can't access your account?' link on the front page.

Please note: There is Compass Parent Booklet located on the College Website under 'Student Life' which provides an overview of key features and information within Compass.

Preston Centuolo's Presentation

Today our Years 8, 9 and 10's listened to a dynamically engaging communicator, Preston Centuolo who visited the College at the invitation of The Gateway Church.

Preston's presentation speaks right to the heart of youth, helping them see beyond pressing obstacles to seize their own unique purpose. For over two decades, Preston has tirelessly shared his inspiring story with young people around the world. His words resonate with youth struggling to find balance in an increasingly chaotic, high pressure, information-overload age.

A masterful storyteller, Preston's message offers a fresh outlook, helping youth find renewed hope and direction in spite of pressing circumstances. He expertly addresses common issues facing youth and demystifies confusing, mixed messages that come from all directions in today's technological era.

Our students were definitely enthralled and inspired with Preston's tales of overcoming adversity and his vision is to reignite hope for a bright future in the lives of young people. Preston wants every young person to recognize they have immeasurable, irrevocable purpose and value no matter what their past or present circumstances. These special gifts and even their struggles can be transformed into platforms of success. He wants to diffuse societal messages misconstruing success and challenge young people to chase after meaningful, authentic dreams as specially-made individuals.

WSC Staff and Students would like to warmly thank Preston and The Gateway Church for providing such a captivating discussion on inclusivity, compassion and challenging oneself.

Introducing our ACE (Acceleration, Commitment and Excellence) program for 2018

This is a wonderful opportunity for extension of learning for current year 7 students and for our 2018 year 7 students.

The ACE program is an educational program designed to meet the needs of high performing, highly motivated students who are ready for the challenge of a complex, fast paced and integrated program of learning.

The aim of the ACE program is to engage high ability learners to reach their full intellectual, social and emotional potential in an enriched education program. It challenges and encourages students to:
• Demonstrate exceptional academic outcomes in the following subjects; Pastoral Care, English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities and Health and Physical Education as well in a range of other opportunities which will contribute to the breadth of their educational experience
• Foster inquiry and the qualities of lifelong learners
• Develop responsible and active citizenship in their communities

This is a select entry program:
• our current Year 7 students who have shown us that they are independent, self-motivated, well organized and have high level literacy and numeracy skills will be invited to participate in 2018
• our year 7's for 2018 will undergo testing during orientation, these results along with NAPLAN and primary school reports will enable us to select the most independent and responsible learning to join the program also.

Year 12 VCAL

on Tuesday, 23 May 2017.

The boys from Year 12 VCAL have started their community project, building a memorial wall.
They are using the skills they are learning during their work placements such as carpentry, concreting and landscaping.
Jarrod, Ayden and Reece are working very hard and we can't wait to see the finished design.

Next Generation Youth Forum

Some of our future leaders visited Latrobe at Bundoora today with Ms Lasslett. The excursion was part of the Next Generation Youth Forum.

Doctors In Schools

The Victorian Government is making sure young people receive the health support, advice and treatment they need to reach their full potential.

Wallan Secondary College has been selected as one of the host schools for the Doctors In Schools program.

Lower Hume VET Cluster

This week, The Lower Hume VET Cluster received an Award for Excellence. Mr Brian Howley accepted the award on their behalf with Ms Sally Lasslett and Ms Carol McLean.

Student Free Day

Please be advised that Friday 9th June, 2017 is a student free day and students are not required to attend school.

On this day Teachers and ES Staff will be participating in Personal Development activities.

Donation to The Alfred

on Monday, 29 May 2017.

On Thursday last week the students held a 'Casual Clothes' Day with all funds being donated to the Heart Transplant Unit at The Alfred.
It was also an opportunity for our students to learn and talk openly about organ and tissue donation.
Our students were very generous and a donation was made for $310.65.

Rhiannon Tracey - Guest Speaker

Yesterday during a full College assembly, our students were fortunate to hear from a guest speaker Ms Rhiannon Tracey.
On September 18, 2009, Rhiannon, on holiday in Bali, suffered an accident after she dove into a pool and changed her life forever. A spinal cord injury from the accident meant that Rhiannon was diagnosed as a C-5 quadriplegic. She was given only the faintest of hope of being able to walk again, just a few months away from turning 21.
After the accident, Rhiannon's emergency surgery was delayed by nine hours due to a horrific earthquake on Indonesian shores. She was moments from death after her lungs had collapsed, and a hospital ward was left deserted as people ran for cover. Finally two weeks later, she was flown to an Australian hospital and underwent two more lifesaving surgeries.
With a strong love for animals, Rhiannon worked as a veterinary nurse before the accident, was an aspiring singer and had a bright future ahead of her. But when doctors told her she would never walk again, they advised her to sell her beloved RAV4, as she would never be physically able to drive it again. Being the tenacious person she is, Rhiannon would not simply accept this, and she set out to prove them wrong.

Old Melbourne Gaol

Today, our Year 9's visited the Old Melbourne Gaol as part of their Humanities subject. They participated in a mock trial and went on a guided tour of the cells.

Thermomix Raffle Drawn

Our Thermomix Raffle was drawn today by Faith Lynch from the Year 10 Humanities class. Thank you to Mr Smith for allowing us to draw the winning entry during his class. The lucky winner was Ms BRONWYN ELLICOTT.

Upon hearing of her good fortune, Bronwyn, who resides in Canberra, requested the appliance be donated to WSC Welfare to auction and for the proceeds to be used to support WSC Students. The Staff and Students thank Bronwyn for her very kind donation.

So stay tuned and we will advise when our 'Silent Auction' will take place.
