Camps Program Update

Saturday, 13 April 2013 Posted in Camps & Activities

As previously communicated in our regular newsletters, the 2013 camps program for our year 9 and 10 students has been placed in question due a minimal level of interest. However, all is not at a loss. There are still a sufficient number of camp deposits to offer one last possibility to ensure a camp can be offered to our year 9 and 10 students. Given the concentration of deposits from both year 9 and 10 students and the interests of students expressed during a camps meeting, the college will offer a combined year 9 and 10 Snow-sports camp as the sole camp for years 9 and 10.

The Snow-sports camp will provide students with the opportunity to visit one of Victoria's most beautiful and fun filled environments. The camp will be based at Mt. Hotham, located at the crest of the Great Alpine Road and offers the highest natural snowfall of any Victorian resort. The resort is suitable for novice, advanced and expert skiers / boarders alike.

While on camp students will stay at Feathertop Chalet, Harrietville, located at the base of Mt. Hotham and about one hours drive from Mt. Hotham central. The camp would be led by Mr Andrew Nicholls, Mr Nicholls has had several years of experience assisting and leading ski camps to this region and is an advanced snowboarder with excellent knowledge of the Mt. Hotham location. During his time in other schools Mr Nicholls has developed a strong working relationship with the tour organisers and resort management.

The staff members from the Feathertop Chalet will provide a full buffet breakfast including cereal, fruit and a cooked breakfast, and a three course evening meal. The kitchen staff endeavours to meet all special food requirements. Accommodation is in a carpeted dormitory with rooms holding 6 – 8 students. Facilities include tennis, mini-golf, theatrette, games room, basketball and a heated swimming pool.

The camp can facilitate up to 40 students who will be accompanied by 3 Wallan Secondary College staff and two other adults. Students will have 4 days of downhill skiing or snowboarding with the first day being used to travel to and settle into Feathertop Chalet. Most days will usually have skiing / snowboarding time in the morning following a 1.5 hour lesson given by professional instructors from the Mt. Hotham Ski School. Lunch on the mountain is a hot buffet from one of the restaurants and includes a drink. After lunch students have 2.5 – 3.5 hours of skiing / boarding with assistance from WSC staff. In the evenings students are supervised by WSC staff while they have free use of the chalet's facilities.
