Our First Nations students recently had the incredible opportunity to participate in an art workshop with Merindah-Gunya, a proud Peek Whurrong woman of the Maar Nation from southwest Victoria (Warrnambool).
Merindah-Gunya guided the students through a journey of understanding Aboriginal symbols and their profound meanings, deepening their connection to culture and tradition.
The students were then given the chance to create their own individual pieces of artwork, inspired by the knowledge they had gained. In addition, they collaborated on a large canvas, working together to bring their collective ideas to life. This collaborative piece not only showcased their individual talents but also highlighted their teamwork and unity in embracing the richness of Aboriginal art.
To mark Close the Gap Day at Wallan Secondary, the students invited their friends to a second art session where they became the teachers. They shared what they had learned and helped their peers and teachers create their own art, fostering a deeper appreciation for Aboriginal culture. This interactive session was a beautiful opportunity for the students to take pride in their heritage while educating others, creating an inclusive space for learning and connection.
The workshop and Close the Gap Day session were powerful reminders of the importance of cultural exchange, creative expression, and community spirit. The students felt proud not only of their artwork but also of their role in teaching and sharing their culture with others. The experience was a truly empowering and inspiring one for all involved.
