Wallan Secondary College welcomed Josh King, NRL Melbourne Storm player, who spoke with our Year 11 VM students about perseverance, resilience, and planning for the future.
Josh generously shared his journey to elite sport, highlighting the dedication and hard work required to compete at the highest level while also completing his apprenticeship as an electrician. He spoke about choosing an apprenticeship in the mining industry close to home because it aligned with both his career goals and personal interests.
Students gained valuable insight into the realities of professional sport, with Josh speaking openly about the highs and lows of his career, including the challenges of poor performance and the impact that negative abuse he received on social media had on his mental health. To better manage his wellbeing, Josh chose to deactivate all of his social media accounts, a decision he continues to maintain today.
Josh reinforced the importance of having a long-term career plan beyond sport and highlighted the personal qualities that have contributed to his success both on and off the field, including resilience, communication, and respect.
A huge thank you to Josh for taking the time to visit WSC and share his experiences so honestly with our students. Your message and advice were greatly appreciated and will leave a lasting impact on our Year 11 VM students.
